Hill cactus

The site of Cactus Hill , located at approximately 70 km of Richmond, in Virginia, is one of some sites which contain testimonys of a pre-Clovis population in North America. This site is in a Dune close to the Nottoway river and contains a laminated series of cultural levels spreading out 20.000 years until the period corresponding to the Site Clovis.

Under the Clovis level and just above a sterile layer of clay, the archeologists discovered several blades of stone, the points of projectile and a scraper, all manufactured out of quartz. Thanks to the dating by radiocarbon 14 of a piece of coal which is associated to them, these artefacts were dated of approximately 17.000 years. Joseph McAvoy responsible for archaeological research on the site of Hill Cactus close to the Nottoway river in Virginia specifies that the artefacts of the level low of the dune could be dated at 19.700 years (about 300 years), by means of the dating by luminescence which is a method representing an alternative to carbon-14. The method can be applied to several types of sediments and the period potentially covered by luminescence extends from current to 300.000 years. Cactus Hill is one of the best known sites the preone. declare the researcher Vance Haynes Jr, professor of the department of anthropology and Géosciences of the university of Arizona, and specialist in the cultures Paléo-Indians.
