Higoumene
The higoumene (of the old Greek ἡγούμενος / hêgoúmenos , takes part present of the verb ἠγέομαι / hêgéomai , literally “to go in front of”, from where “to lead, to order”) of an orthodoxe monastery or catholic of Eastern rite is the superior. The equivalent term, in Occident, is that of Abbé or abbess.
The higouménat is a function. Those which assume it can carry various titles like that of Archimandrite conferred on Hiéromoine S (monk-priests) eminent. There can be several archimandrites in the same monastery. When a higoumene is bishop, one speaks about cathigoumene, and when he is cardinal, one names it cacathigoumene.
