Highway of Normandy

The highway A13 , or highway of Normandy , is a French Autoroute 225 km length which connects Paris to Caen via Rouen. It is historically the first French highway. The portion enters the A28 and Caen belongs to the Autoroute of the Estuaries.

Between Paris and Orgeval, the manager is the State, represented by Interdépartementale Management of the Roads of Ile-de-France. Its use is free of Paris to Mantes-the-Pretty. Beyond that, it is a highway with Péage, managed by the Société of the highways Paris-Normandy (SAPN).

Since the west of the Ile-de-France (Mantes-the-Pretty), it crosses the two areas Normans and serves the two regional prefectures by left bank of the the Seine.

In the medium term A13 will be prolonged until Cherbourg (the skirting of Bayeux is already open). The section “Saint-Cloud - Orgeval” should have opened towards 1940, but the beginning of the Second world war pushed back its inauguration with 1946, opening which involved the rebuilding of the bridge of Saint-Cloud: indeed, until 1974, A13 stopped on the level of this bridge. Since, it is connected to the Parisian peripheral by the viaduct of Saint-Cloud and a tunnel under the north of Boulogne.

Medium-heavy trafic is evaluated with 100.000 vehicles days (between Orgeval and Mantes-the-Pretty), including 92% of light Véhicule S.

Principal works of art

  • Viaduct of Saint-Cloud. He was built out of prestressed concrete, on the side of Boulogne-Billancourt, the abutments await a possible doubling of the viaduct.

  • Tunnel of Saint-Cloud. During the Second world war, the tunnel was used as ammunition dump for the German army, especially of the torpedes of the Kriegsmarine. In the middle of the old tunnel, (direction province), a mouth of ventilation, located in the ceiling, evacuates exhaust fumes in the Parc of Saint-Cloud. The entry of the tunnel (direction province) was arranged according to the drawings of the Swedish artist Bengt Olson.
  • Viaduct of Oissel

Works of art

  • On the trace of the Vikings of Georges Saulterre (1990) with the height of Criquebeuf-sur-Seine.
  • In direction of the province, after the exit, a pyramid of small size recalls the death of combatants of the Second world war. This monument, difficult to see and of dangerous access, is located between the fence safety and netting, it was saved by work of connection of the A86. It is flowered at the date birthday of the engagements.

Tolls

There exists on the highway A13 five barriers of Péage, located at:

Apart from these barriers, all the straps of entries and exit are with free access, so that it is possible to borrow free certain sections of the highway located between these barriers. The highway of Normandy is also free in the crossings of the agglomerations rouennaise and Caen-native and not only between Paris and Mantes.

At the request of the general advice of Yvelines and certain local government agencies, whose commune of the Bonnières-on-Seine, a displacement towards the west of the toll of Buchelay is being studied. Indeed its current location in the agglomeration of Mantes is regarded as an obstacle with the development of the west of the department of Yvelines, not very compatible with the project of Opération of national interest “Seine-Aval” and creates a saturation of the exchangers serving the town of Mantes-the-Pretty. Six scenarios combining of the adjustments of the infrastructure and tariff measurements are considered.
