Québécois Expressway, the Autoroute 440 is divided into two distinct sections. The present one, located in the town of Quebec, bears two names: Highway Charest in its western section and Autoroute Dufferin-Montmorency in its section is. These two sections are outdistanced of approximately 6 km by the downtown area of Quebec. Originally, it was expected that these two highways as well as the Boulevard Champlain are connected using a tunnel, but this project was for a long time abandoned. One can note it still today since two unutilised straps of the highway leads directly to the side of a cliff located under the northern end of the avenue Honore-Draper. This place would have been the entry of the projected highway tunnel. It is however not very probable that this project is carried out one day. The demolition of the aforesaid straps is currently in hand.
The highway Charest, the western section, begins with the junction from the Autoroute 40 and of the Autoroute 73 and finishes at the level of the Blessed Sacrament avenue where it becomes the Charest boulevard. According to the original plans, the section of the Highway 40 between exit 296 and the junction Highway 40 and of the Autoroute 73 (beginning of the 440) was to belong to the Charest Highway. This is due to the fact that the original layout of the forever supplemented Autoroute 40. This is why the numbers of exits begin to 12 on the 440.
The Dufferin-Montmorency Highway begins in the downtown area from Quebec, with the corner of the street of the Bridge and the street of Saint-Vallier Is and finishes with its junction with the Autoroute 40 in the sector Beauport. There exists a fire of circulation on this section of highway, with the height of the François-of-Laval Boulevard, because it would have been impossible to build an exchanger at this place because of a lack of space due in the vicinity of the Fleuve the St. Lawrence.
One should not confuse highway 440 of Quebec with the Autoroute 440, located at Laval.
