Higher lake

The lake Supérieur is largest of the Big lakes of the North America, and the vastest fresh water lake in the world. (The Lac Baïkal in Siberia is bulkier: 23.600 km ³ of water followed by the lake Tanganyika, to Africa; the Caspian Sea is larger but is salted.)

Geography

The lake Supérieur extends on a surface from 82  350  km ², of which 53  600  km ² belong to the territory of the the United States. The lake Supérieur is vaster than the Tchéquie; its maximum length and width are of 563  km and 257  km. Its average depth is of 149  m and reached a maximum of 406. The lake Supérieur contains 12  232  km ³ of water (12  232 billion liters - 10% of fresh water of the world) and count 4  393  km of shores, including its islands.

It bathes the province of the Ontario (Canada) in north, and the States of the Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan (the United States) in the south. The the largest island of the lake is the Isle Royale, attached to the territory of the State of the Michigan and indicated international reserve of the biosphere by UNESCO.

Hydrology

More than 200 Rivière S lead to this lake, of which the river Nipigon, the river Saint Louis, the Rivière Pigeon, the river Pic, the Rivière White, the Rivière Michipicoten, and the river Kaministiquia. The lake is thrown in the Lake Huron by the river Sainte-Marie. The sault Sainte-Marie on this river requires the locks of Sault, part of the Sea route of the St. Lawrence, to cross the difference in 7,5 meters between the lakes Supérieur and Huron.

History and populations

In the beginning, the inhabitants of the area of the lake Supérieur were the Amerindian S Ojibwé (Anishinabe).
Le lake accepted its name of the French explorers because of his higher altitude compared to all the other Big lakes.

Several important cities are on the accesses of the lake, in particular Duluth (Minnesota), Thunder Bay (Ontario), Marquette (Michigan), Sault co. Marie (Ontario) and Sault co. Marie (Michigan).

The grounds which surround it in Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan present important mining resources of which the Cuivre, the Fer, the money, the Or and the Nickel. Their exploitation caused various Pollution S. Several cities developed thanks to a mining activity current or passed. The lake itself remains an important way of the transport of Iron ore.

Tourism

The area éparsement inhabited around the lake attracts the tourists with its austere coasts and its landscapes; tourism represents an important sector today.

Several picturesque places are with the accesses of the lake, of which

  • the national park of Pukaskwa (Canada)
  • the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore,
  • the National park of Isle Royale (the United States),
  • the Grand Island National Re-creation Area and
  • the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (the United States).
