High council of education
Created in France in 2005, the High council of education is an authority equipped with an advisory competence on the base of the essential knowledge, the programs and the evaluation of the results.

; Article L. 230-1: The High council of education is composed of nine members designated for six years. Three of its members are indicated by the President of the Republic, two by the president of the National Assembly, two by the president of the Senate and two by the president of the Economic and Social Council apart from the members of these assemblies. The president of the high council is appointed by the President of the Republic among his members. ; Article L. 230-2: The High council of education gives an opinion and can formulate proposals at the request of the minister in charge for state education on the relative questions with pedagogy, the programs, the modes of evaluation of knowledge of the pupils, with the organization and the results of the education system and the training of the teachers. Its opinions and proposals are made public. ; Article L. 230-3: The High council of education gives each year to the President of the Republic an assessment, which is made public, of the results obtained by the education system. This assessment is transmitted to the Parliament.

By Presidential decree of the Republic dated October 26th, 2005, are members of the High council of education:1) Members designated by the President of the Republic
- Mr. Bruno Racine, adviser main at the Court of Auditors, chair National center of art and Georges-Pompidou culture.
- Mr. Laurent Lafforgue, professor at the Institute of the high scientific studies.
- Mrs. Valerie Hannin, aggregate professeure.
- Mr. Alain Bouvier, former vice-chancellor, former president of the conference of the directors of academic institutes of training of the Masters.
- Mrs. Marie-Therese Geffroy, director of the National agency of fight against illiteracy.
- Mr. Denis Tillinac, general president-director of the editions of the Roundtable.
- Mr. Jean-Pierre Foucher, professor of the universities.
- Mr. Christian Forestier, general inspector of state education.
- Mr. Michel Pébereau, president of bank, president of the board of management of the Institute of political studies of Paris.
Mr. Bruno Racine is named president of the High council of education.
Evolution
Laurent Lafforgue resigns as of on November 21st, 2005. It is replaced on March 2nd, 2006 by Antoine Compagnon, professor at the university Paris-Iv Sorbonne.
Work
The HCE made public on March 30th, 2006 its recommendations on the common base of knowledge that all the pupils will have to control at the 16 years age. It rests on seven pillars:-

- Competences basic in mathematics and scientific culture and technological
- Control of the information techniques and communication
- humanistic Culture
- social Competences and civic
- Autonomy and initiative
According to Bruno Racine, president of the HCE " This text was adopted unanimously by the Council, after three months of intesive work rather. The Minister for State education will fix by decree the definition of the base. This decree should appear before the été".
