The École of the high commercial studies (or HEC) is one of most prestigious the French universities. She is regarded by the Financial Times as best the business school of Europe. Created in 1881, the school is managed and financed by the Chamber of commerce and of industry of Paris (CCIP).

The Groupe HEC is an administrative structure created by the CCIP in 1970, under the name of Center of higher education of the businesses, in order to gather the School of the high commercial studies, the Institute of higher learning of the businesses (ISA) and the Training center continues. The Center of improvement to the businesses of Paris was integrated into Group HEC in 1999. Group HEC proposes various formations with the Management and the entrepreneuriat: traditional course on contest (called course University) leading to a diploma of Master off Science, continuous MBA, Mastères specialized, doctorate and education acts.

The campus is installed since 1964 on the commune of Jouy-in-Josas, in the department of the Yvelines.

History of the school

Difficult beginnings

The school of the High Commercial Studies opens its doors with 57 pupils the December 4th 1881, Malesherbes boulevard with Paris. Enough late compared to the other schools, like ESCP in Paris in 1819 or National colleges of business (ESC) of Le Havre, of Rouen and Lyon to the beginning of the year 1870. The school ambitionne then to be for the trade what the Central School is for industry . The frame of mind of the time is then with a better recognition of the role of the economy. Thus, Maurice Rouvier, Minister for the colonies, declares it during the inauguration:

Your work, Sirs, have a double merit: it proceeds of a high thought and fertilizes and it comes at its hour. I say that it comes at its hour because we touch at the time when questions of the economic order, commercial and financial have to take an increasingly big part| Maurice Rouvier, Minister for the colonies|Inaugural speech on December 4th, 1881

The beginnings are difficult: The school is little known, expensive and suffers from an easy reputation of school for children of good family. Illustration, between 1902 and 1904, the number of pupils drops by 401 to 277. The graduates are then still allowed of right. The introduction of a contest in 1892 tries to reverse this impression. Removed in 1906, it is restored in 1913. The direction also innovates by the introduction of an entrance examination in second year in 1921 or, the following year, the experimental introduction of the method of the cases. The courses remain however, as in the French of the time, very theoretical teaching. In 1938, the schooling passes from two to three years and the obligatory training course in company is introduced, and the level of the teaching staff is increased by the recruitment of holders of American MBA. In 1964, the rupture is incarnated by the displacement of the school on true a Campus with Jouy-in-Josas, inaugurated on July 9th, 1964 by the Général de Gaulle. It is one of the first schools to leave Paris to settle in vaster buildings in suburbs. The general evolution continues with the constitution of a permanent teaching staff which, from zero in 1962, passes to 79 in 1970. Agreements are also signed with foreign schools like ESADE (Spain), the Bocconi (Italy) or McGill (Canada). The accreditations AMBA, Equis and AACSB come to recognize this progress in the years 1990-2000. In 2001 group HEC launches TRIUM Executive MBA, program united with New York University and the London School off Economics.

In 1973, the entrance examination is opened to the girls and HEC Young girls disappears. In 1985, the girls account for 30% of promotion and in the years 2000 between 45 and 50%.

The doctoral program is born in 1975 but until 1985 the doctors must support their thesis at the university. It is into 1985 that the school obtains the right to distinguish the title of doctor. The teaching staff continues to develop and reaches 350 people in 1980, with like corollary a greater specialization: Creation of specializations “Finances” and “Contractors” in 1986. Corollary of the Big Bang and the explosion of the City , more and more students of this first specialization leave in England and, more generally, the students of the school abroad. In 2006, a third of the students left for their first employment abroad.

In addition the school develops the pulpits financed by companies (Deloitte, EDF, Toshiba,…) to multiply the bonds with these last. The purpose of foundation HEC, created in 1972, is specific to develop these bonds and the financing of the school by the companies, currently of 4,5 € million per annum.
