Hibiscus syriacus
Hibiscus syriacus is a species of Arbuste kind Hibiscus of the family of the Malvacée S, originating in the moderate areas of the Far East, very largely cultivated like decorative Plante in the gardens.
It is also called hibiscus common of the gardens, althéa, marsh mallow out of tree, mauve out of tree, ketmy of the gardens (or Rose off Althea or Rose off Sharon in English).
Description
The Hibiscus syriacus is a shrub which can reach five meters height and as much width. The Sheet S, null and void, alternate, simple, oval or are lancéolées, on toothed or undulated board.
The Fleur S, transitory, with central symmetry (Actinomorphic S) have from 6 to 8 cm in diameter and appear from July to October. They are insulated or grouped in Inflorescence S. The chalice account five Sepal S free, the Corolla five Petal S free or slightly welded at the base. The five cheesecloth S are welded between them, forming a long tube. The Pistil rather often has five ovary S and a length style passing inside the tube of cheesecloths. The marks open only when cheesecloths are faded, allowing a cross fecundation.
The fruits are capsules which open with maturity to release often hairy seeds.
Origin and distribution
This species originating in Asia arrived in Europe via the Syria at the 16th century.
Culture
It is often planted in the areas at hot summer for its pretty transitory flowersIn a natural state, the Hibiscus syriacus form a bulky bush very ramified with the drawn up stems but by cutting it each year (at the end of the winter), one can also make a pretty small flowered tree of it.
The althéa flowers on the wood of the year. One thus may find it beneficial to cut it regularly to obtain a better flowering.
Of rather fast growth (30 to 40 cm per annum), he appreciates the full sun in summer and is very rustic in winter (until -15° C).
One can very easily multiply it by Semis but without reproducing the varieties accurately.
Initially mauve, the Hibiscus syriacus is one of the crazes of the Horticulteur S since tens of years. Following many Hybridization S, one finds today althéas with flowers white, pink, red, blue or two-tone. In corollas, they can be solitary or carried per pairs, simple or double, and have in certain varieties a more constant heart of the most beautiful effect.
