Hettange-Large

Hettange-Large is a common French located in the department of the the Moselle.

Geography

Brood in the middle of the Country of the Three Borders (Luxembourg, Germany, France), the commune of Hettange-Large profits since more than one century of a world reputation within the scientific community.

It into 1864 that the Swiss geologist Renevier proposed to retain the Gries career, is indeed located on the round of applause of the commune, like international reference of a geological stage going back to 199,6 to 196,5 million years before our era. The Stratotype " Hettangien " had just been born.

History

Archaeological excavations put at the day the vestiges of an important Gallo-Roman transport cafeé, not of required passage on the Roman track carrying out of Metz to Trier. The majority of the exhumed parts are preserved at the Musée of the Tower to the Chips of Thionville.

Entirely destroyed during the invasions of the 4th century, the borough knew throughout the Middle Ages an animated history, successively razzié by the Residents of Metz, data several times in pledge, attached to the Duchy of the Luxembourg, then finally in France in 1659.

Only vestige of these disturbed times, the vault of Soetrich preserves today many elements of the 15th century which survived the Guerre Thirty Year old.

The true birth of Hettange-Large goes up in fact at the contemporary period. The careers were indeed exploited since 1809. But it is the mining industry which was at the origin of the demographic explosion of the city. The Mine Charles Ferdinand opened indeed his doors in 1904 and then allowed a flourishing activity during 75 years. The war also marked the site of its print. Seven works with defensive vocation built during the inter-war period within the Ligne Maginot cover the territory of the commune: the Rough work of Soetrich, the Small Work of Immerhof, three shelters of interval (Hettange-Large, Road of Luxembourg and Helmreich) like two observatories (Hettange-Large and Road of Luxembourg).

The Small Work of Immerhof, in a perfect state of conservation, includes/understands four blocks, of which the block of entry and three blocks of combat under turrets with eclipse. Three hundred meters of galleries connect the various blocks and the interior installations.

The District Guyon Gellin built in the Thirties to shelter the troops of fortress, is occupied today by the 40eme Régiment of Transmissions.

  • the geological Natural reserve of Hettange-Large is one of the 11 geological reserves of France, and only Lorraine.

This site presents an obvious teaching character. The illustration of the geological points most interesting (fossiliferous sandstones of Luxembourg and Hettange-Large, meadow dries on fall, etc) is done thanks to a circuit marked out with, in season, of the guided visits.

  • Attracted by the many historical and natural richnesses of Hettange-Large, the visitor will also find within a main forest of more than 1000 ha, crossed by the antique sees Roman, of many paths of hiking.
