Hermann Van Rompuy

Hermann Van Rompuy is a Belgian politician Dutch-speaking born with Etterbeek on October 31st, 1947. Member of CD&V, it is president of the Chambre of the Representatives since July 12th, 2007.

Hermann Van Rompuy represents the preserving wing of the party within the CD&V; he stresses the standards and the values, the respect and other topics ethical. He in addition has the image of an intellectual.

His/her younger brother, Eric Van Rompuy, also member of the CD&V, were Minister for the Flemish Gouvernement of 1995 to 1999.

Biography

Hermann Van Rompuy completed his secondary studies with the Sint-Jan-Berchmans college of Brussels (graeco-latin Humanités) in 1965. He is graduate (1968) in philosophy fired thomist and with great distinction (1971) in Economic scenes of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Hermann is the son of the professor of economy Vic Van Rompuy.

Van Rompuy began as an attache with the service from studies from the National Banque from 1972 to 1975. Between 1973 and 1975, he was vice-president of the CVP-jongeren (Young CVP) and as from 1978 he became member of the office of party of the CVP ( Christelijke Volkspartij ), now renamed CD&V ( Christen-Democratisch in Vlaams ).

At the end of the years 1970, he was member of the ministerial cabinets of Léo Tindemans (1975-1978) and Gaston Geens (1978-1980). Starting from the middle of the years 1980, Van Rompuy belonged to the direction of its party and was of 1980 to 1988 director of the center of studies of the party, the CEPESS. It took part in the negotiations of formation of the government of Wilfried Martens (III until and including VIII) (1982-1988) and of Jean-Luc Dehaene (I and II). From 1982 to 1988, he taught with the Vlaamse Ekonomische Hogeschool van Brussel (“High Flemish economic School of Brussels”) (VLEKHO). For this period, he was the president of district of the CVP Brussel-Market-Vilvoorde. He was of 1988 to 1993 the national president of his party.

In September 1993, Van Rompuy succeeds Mieke Offeciers as a Minister for the Budget and he is also Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Budget in the governments Dehaene I and II (until 1999). As a Minister for the Budget, Van Rompuy managed in six years to strongly reduce the Belgian budget deficit.

The ministerial career of Hermann Van Rompuy was completed following the heavy defeat at the polls of its party in June at 1999 (had inter alia with the crisis of dioxane) which sent the CD&V in the opposition. It is since then member of the Chambre. In 2004, it obtained the title of minister of state. During two governments Verhofstadt (1999-2007), Van Rompuy was especially present in the Cyberespace via its Blog thanks to which, according to its clean dires, it survived and made many Haïku S.

July 12th, 2007, Hermann Van Rompuy was elected as a new president of the Room. During negotiations for the formation of the new government, he was active member of the negotiators team of the CD&V. From August 29th to September 29th, 2007, the king Albert named it as a exploring ( verkenner in Dutch) to leave the dead end the formation of the government.
