Herman de Alaska
The adjective hanîf (Arab: rear RTL حَنِيف, true believer , rear pl. RTL حُنَفاء) appoints the Arab monotheists before the Islam. Then that qualifies “truths believers”. The word would come from the Sabéen and means pilgrim. Islam proclaims the “religion of Abraham”:
- Which professes a more beautiful religion than that which is submitted to God, who makes the good and follows into true believing the Religion of Abraham.
- Coran IV; 125.
The anteislamic hanîfs were Arabic who condemned the pagan worships, without however being neither Jewish, nor Christian.
One should not confuse this term with Hanafisme which is one of the four legal universities (Madhhab)
