Herluin de Conteville

Herluin de Conteville (about 1001 - about 1066), was a Norman lord, Viscount of Conteville. He would have been the son of Jean de Conteville. He is the father of two important characters of the reign of his son-in-law William the Conqueror, Robert de Mortain and Odon of Bayeux.

He marries Arlette of Cliff († about 1050), the former mistress of Robert Splendid the, Duc of Normandy, and mother of William the Conqueror.

The date of their marriage is unknown. There exist two theories opposed on this point.

The first makes the assumption that the duke being satisfied of its mistress gives himself it in marriage to Herluin. The marriage and birth of their two sons being done then between 1029 and 1032.

The second theory is based on the account of the chronicler Guillaume de Jumièges, comtemporain of the facts: “  But after the duke pilgrim of Jerusalem had died, certain Herluin, honest knight, took Herlève for woman, and had of them two wire, Eudes and Robert, which in the continuation arrived to a large illustration nbsp; ”.

It founds the Abbaye of Grestain towards 1050 and it is there that him and his wives were buried.

Family and descent

They had at least five children, of which  :

They would have had several girls whose filiation is not proven  :

  • Muriel († about 1085), which married Eudes de Chapel, lord of $the Hague - of-Well, Viscount of Côtentin and seneshal of the Conqueror  ;
  • Isabelle, which married Henri de Centvilles, Count de Sées. Osmond de Sées is his/her son  ;
  • Emma, which married Richard '' Goz '', Vicomte of Avranches  ;
  • a not named girl who married Guillaume, lord of Ferté-Macé.

In second weddings, he married Fredesensis :

  • Raoul or Ranulf de Conteville († after 1089). It is recorded in the Domesday Book like owner in the Somerset and the Devonshire in 1086   ;
  • Jean de Conteville, probably dead young person.
