Herford
Herford is a German city of Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia, chief town of the district of Herford in the district of Detmold.
Geography
Geographical location
Herford is located in the " Ravensberger Hügelland" , landscape of low hills between the Teutoburger Wald and Wiehengebirge. The highest place is Dornberg in the district Schwarzenmoor (240 m) - the place low is located in the Valley of the Werre in the district Falkendiek (56 m). Close to the downtown area the confluence of the Aa and the Werre is, which crosses the city of north to the south. Stadtwald with Stuckenberg is in the east of the city.

History
History of Herford
Herford was born towards 789 because of its situation militarily important by the union of three farms. Around 800 the Abbey of the women of Herford was founded.
During the Middle Ages and until the catch by the Prussia after the Guerre Thirty Year old Herford was an imperial city and a member of the hanseatic league.
Between 1807 and 1813 Herford was integrated in the Royaume of Westphalia and in 1816 became the capital of a lower administrative entity “Kreis”.
Jewish history with Herford
The Jewish refugees arrived at Herford at XIe century, as in the remainder of Westphalia. Documents indicate the presence of Jews to Herford since 1306.The Jews also worked for the abbey. N the other hand of taxes, they had the right to be established downtown. One authorized them to build a synagog in 1808 and the community increases approximately 300 people. They had access to the same rights however only the citizens as in 1869. Very few Jews of Herford survived the Nazisme. In 1945, the community counted nothing any more but 10 to 15 people. Since, it increased only one forty immigrants of the Soviet Union.
During the Night of crystal, the synagog was burned and plundered. Today, a monument builds on the ruins points out this date.
