Synopsis

Andre Chatelin, restorer with the markets, carries out a life without history until the arrival of Catherine, girl of Gabrielle, his former wife. She announces the death of her mother and says herself without resources. Chatelin accommodates it under its roof, then the wife. Gerard, young person studied that Chatelin regards as his/her son, becomes the lover of Catherine who scrambled it with Chatelin. She asks him to kill the restorer, he refuses. She assassinates it. Having discovered that Gabrielle saw always, déchue and doped, it realizes of the blackness of heart of Catherine who always lied to him. César, the dog of Gerard, will make justice.

One wrote much in connection with the pessimism of Julien Duvivier, of the blackness of his films and this one is perhaps the quintessence.
La superb photograph black, white and gray of Armand Thirard plunges us in a twilight, if not sepulchral universe. It is undoubtedly not by chance only Duvivier never shows us the sun, but a vague lampion overcome by the shades and that its protagonists are agitated in one season dying woman… Not a sharp cold but a wet species of torpor as that which stagnates around marshy water or pourrissantes of the sewers, supplied with the fluids animal, visceral, run out since the Markets of Paris, left large agitated belly of internal conflicts and carnivorous. It is a seizing vision of the autumn of the life before the scissors machiavelic of the harpies Catherine, Gabrielle or of the Chatelin mother (and her whip with witch, scene of anthology) do not complete their destruction and self-destruction. They cut in parts the rock Chatelin-Gabin, that which gave to eat without too much knowing why (because it is necessary well to live, is worth that to live like known as the song) and make a fate with Gerard, transitory incarnation of a fragile youth and a possible future.

It is necessary to pay homage to Duvivier for its application to turn in natural decorations. It admirably restores the life grouillante old Markets, on bottom of not less admirable the houses Baltard destroyed by other demolition contracters and whose Paris still carries the marks more than 30 years after their disappearance. The rare animated moments of an acceptable pretense of life are the general scenes at the restaurant and with the guinguette of Chatelin and Duvivier in addition avoids making a Parisian iconography of it. Its images and its speech are much closer to those, even more pessimistic, of the film In girum imus nocte and consumimur igni (We turn in round in the night and we are devoured by fire) of the situationnist Guy Debord…
