Herbert Samuel

Herbert Samuel (1870 - 1963) is an English Jewish politician and first consul in Palestine.

He is born in England in 1870. He works with the service of the governmental higher realms. At 38 years, he is elected Minister for the British government. During the First World War, it approaches the Zionism. He becomes chief of council and adheres to the Congrès Zionist of England . He uses of his influence near the British government for the recognition of a State for the Juifs in Palestine, and becomes the support of the Dr. Weizman in his negociations for obtaining the Déclaration Balfour.

Years 1920 with 1925, it fills the function of British general consul, first of the name in Palestine. The jubilation which within the Jewish Peuple causes, in the world and in Palestine, the nomination of Herbert Samuel to his new functions, is of short life within sight of the problems such as the Arab extremism, the nomination of Amin Al-Husseini - which was with the head of the fatal riots of 1920 - as Mufti of Jerusalem and the new slaughters organized by the Arabs in May 1921. It is also the time of the beginning of the intensive development of the country. The Jewish immigration is considerable. Herbert Samuel sows the first steps of the educational and medical infrastructures then.

Of his return in England, Samuel continues his public activity near the Jewish mediums and not-Jews. He directs the Liberal party to the British Parliament and the House of Lords. In 1937, it receives the title of Viscount. It takes part in the creation of the Jewish Agence like in the assistance campaigns to the Juifs of Germany, following the rise with the capacity of the Nazi party. It proves to be a talented writer and a fine speaker.

Herbert Samuel dies in 1963. The district of " Kiryat Shmuel" with Tibériade as well as the district " Ahuzat Herbert Samuel" on the Mont Carmel recall its memory today.
