Herbert Putnam
Herbert Putnam (born on September 20th, 1861 and deceased on August 14th, 1955) was Bibliothécaire Bibliothèque of the Congress of the the United States of 1899 with 1939.
Biography
It was born with New York, where his/her father George Palmer Putnam was a famous editor.It is graduate Université Harvard in 1883 and studied the Droit to the Université of Columbia what enabled him to be able to practice starting from 1886.
Of 1884 with 1887 he is librarian in Mineapolis Athenæum, then of 1887 with 1891 with the Mineapolis Public Library. It practices the right to Boston of 1892 with 1895 and becomes again librarian of 1895 with 1899 with the Boston Public Library where it contributes to enrich the collection by Photographie S.
It leaves Boston Public Library in 1899 following its nomination as librarian as a chief of the Library of the Congress by the President of the United States William McKinley. It is the first at this station in the history of this institution which has experience of librarian. He leaves his functions in 1939 to be replaced by the poet Archibald MacLeish.
During its administration, it sets up the Classification of the Library of the Congress which is still of use today. It also organizes a system of Prêt between libraries and increased the role of the Library of the Congress and its relations with the other library.
He dies with Woods Hole in the Massachusetts at the 93 years age.
His/her daughter, Brenda Putnam (1890-1975) was sculptrice.
Titles
He is elected twice like chair American Library Association in 1898 and 1904.
In 1902 it becomes one of the persons in charge of the Harvard University and is elected in 1925 with the American Academy off Arts and Letters.
One decreed several diplomas to him honorary, in particular with the Bowdoin College, the Williams College, the Université of Yale, the Brown College.
