Herbauges
General presentation
The county of Herbauges was created by the seigniories of the Low-Poitou in order to fight effectively against the threat Norman.
Geography
The county of Herbauges recovered the Low-Poitou including/understanding the Pays of current Retz, plus the north of the the Vendée from the coastal islands (Noirmoutier, Bouin), until Tiffauges, the valley of Clisson and the Mauges inside the grounds.
History
In 820, the Vikings threaten Noirmoutier, burn the priory of Beauvoir, seize the island of Bouin, plunder it, make captive its inhabitants and set out again charged with spoils for their country. Vis-a-vis their raids and with the permanent threats, that they make weigh on the populations of bottom Poitou, the seigniories decide to organize defense and resistance to these invaders.
To protect at the same time and the threatened islands and the continent which bordered them, it was decided the creation of the county of Herbauges, vast military possession having for Ratiatum chief town, today Rezé, was probably delimited in north by the the Loire, in the east by theNantes one, midday by Large Lay, the west by the Ocean Atlantique.
Two pagus less considerable, Mauges and Tiffauges, were built-in these limites.
This county, named Herbauges, thus contained rather important military forces, being able with the improvist to go on threatened points.
In 830, the Vikings seize Noirmoutier burn and destroy the monastère.
Renaud or Raynaud, count d' Herbauges, took again possession of Noirmoutier with considerable forces.
In 835, the Norman ones were presented, opposite the port named the Conch, with nine vessels of high bearing edge in their sides a many cavalry. They unloaded, but the courageous resistance of Renaud and the islanders who went as a crowd to the ramparts, was right of the bravery of the Norman ones. Many Norman riders and infantrymen were killed. wanting to avenge this failure, the Vikings returned a few months later, with more considerable forces, seized the island of Noirmoutier, given up by the monks and the inhabitants, and made a kind of general headquarter of it where it brought back the spoils of their forwardings.
In 841: Lambert II of Nantes combat with the count Ricuin of Nantes to the Battle of Fontenoy-in-Puisaye the June 25th 841. Ricuin having been killed the county of Nantes that Lambert regarded as its legitimate heritage is entrusted by the king of France Charles the Bald person to Renaud, count d' Herbauge. Lambert then gives up the party of the king and joined Nominoë.
In 843: Renaud of Nantes beats Lambert of Nantes combined with Breton of Nominoé and to the Vikings of Hasting to the Bataille of Messac (?) but a little later it is beaten and killed with Blain the May 24th 843. The Nantes ones refuse to recognize Lambert as count. This last is suspected of having guided the Norman ones which it June 24th put the city at bag and kill the bishop in his cathedral. After the departure of its Lambert allies makes itself finally main from Nantes. In 844: Lambert kills in a combat the count Bernard of Poitiers and the son and successor of Renaud: Herve count d' Herbauges.
In 851, the Treated of Angers between the king of Francie Western, Charles the Bald person and the chief of Breton the Erispoé give to the Brittany, the northern part of the country of Herbauges, the " vicaria Retense" or Country of Retz.
As of Xesiècle, the county of Nantes and the South the Loire fall under the angevine influence from the Plantagenêts with the reign from Foulque Ier from Anjou which receives the Comté of Nantes. Their history will be until XIIIesiècle closely related to that of the Anjou.
During two more centuries, the Norman ones will make the many ones and devastators forwardings on the County of herbauges and with beyond worms the heart of the Poitou and until in Aquitaine.
It is only at the beginning of XIe century that the count of Poitou Guillaume V of Poitiers, with the head of a powerful army, will crush the forces Normans. The County of Herbauges covers keeps and fortresses. The Norman ones understand that times changed.
