Henryk Arctowski
Henryk Arctowski is a Géologue, oceanographer and meterologist Polish, born with Warsaw the July 15th 1871 and deceased in 1958.
Biography
It makes its studies in Belgium at the University of Liege in chemistry and geology. It continues then its formation with Paris. It belongs to the Belgian polar forwarding of Adrien de Gerlache which makes a success of the first wintering in the Antarctic (1897-1899) on board the BelgicaIn 1910, he emigrates with the the USA where he becomes attached scientist to the New York Library. In 1920 it returns to Poland to take the direction of the institute of geophysics and meterology of the university of Lviv. In 1939 it goes back to the USA to the Institut smithsonien to Washington. He dies in 1958.
Recognition
In recognition of its work and its contribution to science, its name was given to several places. Since 1977, a Polish base on the island of the king Georges in the Antarctic bears his name as well as the peninsula Arctowski.
