Henry Koster

Henry Koster (of his true name Hermann Kosterlitz ) is a Réalisateur, Scénariste and American Producteur born on May 1st 1905 with Berlin (Germany), deceased the September 21st 1988 with Camarillo (the United States).

Biography

Henry Koster was still young when his/her father, a salesman, left the house. He arranged himself to finish his secondary studies in Berlin by writing news and by carrying out cartoons.

Koster discovered the cinema world very early when his/her uncle, about 1910, opened a cinema in Berlin. His/her mother played piano to accompany films, letting her child look at the spectacle. After having worked at the beginning as writer of news, Koster was engaged as scenario writer by a Berliner company of cinema and became the assistant of the realizer Curtis Bernhardt. One day, this last fell sick and required of Koster to take care of the realization of a film. Thus in years 1931/1932, it carried out two or three films for the company UFA.

In the middle of the realization of a film, Koster realized that it underwent already a form of Anti-sémitisme, and understood that it should leave. It lost its cold blood during a fixing with an officer SA and struck it. Then, it slipped by directly to the station and left Germany for France, where it was again committed by Curtis Bernhardt which had been exiled a little earlier. Then Koster left for Budapest where it met and married Kato Kiraly in 1934. In Budapest, it met Joe Pasternak which represented the company Universal in Europe, and it carried out three films for him.

In 1936, Koster signed a contract to work with Universal in Hollywood, and it embarked for the United States with his wife and other refugees, to work with Pasternak. In spite of the fact that he did not speak English, it managed to convince the studio to let it carry out Three Smart Girls . The film was a great success and saved Universal of the bankruptcy. The second film of Koster for Universal, One Hundred Men and has Girl , with Deanna Durbin and Leopold Stokowski was all with the glory of the studio, Deanna Durbin, Pasternak and Koster.

Koster carried out many musical films and family at the end of the Thirties and with beginning of the year 40, with actresses like Betty Grable and Deanna Durbin. He worked for Universal until 1941, then went to MGM, and the Fox in 1948. He married the actress Peggy Moran in 1942.

He was nominated with the Oscars in 1947 for The Bishop' S Wife and directed all the large actors of the time: James Stewart, Richard Burton in its first American film My cousin Rachel , Marlon Brando, White beet Davis, Ava Gardner,…

Its last film was The Singing Nun in 1965. It was withdrawn in Camarillo in California to devote itself to painting until its death in 1988.
