Henry John Elwes

Henry John Elwes is a Botaniste and a British Entomologiste , born the May 16th 1846 with Gloucestershire and dead the November 26th 1922 with Colesborne Hall close to Cheltenham.

He is the son of John Henry Elwes and Mary born Bromley. He makes his studies with Eton. He enters the Scottish guard in 1865. He collects Plante S and Insecte S in minor Asia, in Turkey, India, with the Tibet, in North America, with the Mexico, the Chile, in Russia, China, with the Japan and Formosa.

He is the first to receive the Médaille Victoria of the honor allotted by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1897. He is the author of the Monograph off the Genus Lilium (1880), Trees off Great Britain and Ireland with Augustine Henry (1857-1930) as well as many articles. He is the author of many news species. He bequeaths his collection of 30 000 specimens of butterflies to the British Museum.

He becomes member of the Royal Society the June 3rd 1897.
