Henry Grimes

Henry Alonzo Grimes is a Contrebassiste American, born the November 3rd 1935 with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

It starts to study the Violon with the college, then adopts the Contrebasse at its entry in technical school. In 1953 it returns to the Juilliard School and starts to play with groups of Rhythm 'N blues.

In 1957, it plays with Anita O' Day, then Gerry Mulligan, before integrating the trio of Sony Rollins (1958 - 1959, then 1962). But one especially hears it in the medium Free jazz: with Cecil Taylor, Gift Cherry, Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders… It gives up the music in 1965 and sells its Contrebasse.

In 1984, one announces his death. But an impassioned welfare worker of Jazz locates it in California, where he survives thanks to odd jobs and the social security. Henry Grimes takes again a musical activity in 2002, playing on a Contrebasse which William Parker gave him. In 2003, it occurs with the “Vision Jazz Festival” of New York and turns in Europe, with the head of a group supplemented by Perry Robinson and Andrew Cyrille.
