Henri de Sponde
Henri de Sponde (or Henri Spondanus) was an ecclesiastic, lawyer and French historian, continuator of Caesar Baronius, born on January 6th 1568 with Mauléon in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques. Deceased with Toulouse on May 18th 1643, it was bishop of Pamiers.
Biography
After studies with the college calvinist of Orthez, it accompanies the royal ambassador in Scotland. On its return, it approaches the study of jurisprudence. In 1589, he is lawyer with the Parliament of Tours.Convinced by the writings of the cardinal Robert Bellarmin and by the instructions of the cardinal Jacques Of the Perron, it converts with Catholicism on September 21st 1595.
In 1600, it accompanies the cardinal François de Sourdis with Rome, where it is ordered priest on March 7th 1606. The pope Paul V appoints then it reviser of the memories of Pœnitentiaria.
In 1625, it is made bishop of Pamiers. Working then with the safeguarding of Catholicism in this region and starts to visit its diocese with horse or foot, traversing the mountains where the inhabitants had never seen their bishop. He reorganizes the religious life in the highland and converts many Protestants. He stimulates the maintenance of the isolated religious buildings and encourages interior decorations while taking care to remain in conformiter with the decrees of the Concile of Thirty which prohibited the reprensentations impure or causing. Between 1625 and 1630, it tries to establish a convent of Minimes with Tarascon-on-Ariège, but fails fault of means.
He resigns of his diocese in 1639 and withdraws himself in Toulouse for health reasons.
