Henri Milne Edwards

Henri Milne Edwards (known also under the name of Milne-Edwards ), born the October 23rd 1800 with Bruges and dead the July 29th 1885 with Paris, is a zoologist French.
Biography
He is the 29e child of William Edwards, rich grower of the Jamaica, and of the second wife of this last Elisabeth Vaux, French. But his/her father, who helps of the British to join their country, is stopped by the troops of Napoleon. Milne Edwards is then led to Paris by his/her older brother William Edwards, doctor. The fall of Napoleon allows the release of their father and all the family meets in Paris.Henri studies the Médecine and obtains his doctorate in 1823. He publishes in 1828 his Recherches on the Crustacé S which are rewarded by the Price for physiology for the Academy of Science.
He follows the courses of Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) and binds friendship with Jean Victoire Audouin (1797-1841). It is with the latter that it carries out between 1826 1828 an extremely detailed study of the coastal marine animal-life of the surroundings of Granville.
Henri Marie with Laura Trézel, with which it has nine children, of which Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900), which will become also zoologist.
In 1832, Henri becomes professor of hygiene and natural history to the central College of arts and manufactures. With died of Audouin in 1841, it is named with the pulpit of entomology of the national Muséum of natural history. When Dumas becomes minister in 1849, it succeeds to him the décanat. In 1862, it succeeds Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1805-1861) with the pulpit of Mammalogie of this same natural history museum. He is also senior of the Faculty of Science of Paris and professor of zoology, anatomy, physiology.
The majority of this work are published in the Annales natural science , publication of which it directs the part devoted to the zoology (starting from 1834). Among its other works, it is necessary to mention its Natural history of the shellfish (3 volumes, 1837-1841), which is remained a reference book a long time; a Natural history of the coralliaires , (1858-1860); and especially important the Lessons on the physiology and the comparative anatomy of the man and the animals (14 volumes, 1857-1881).
In 1848, he becomes foreign member of the Royal Society of London, company which rewards it in 1856 by decreeing the Médaille Copley to him.
