Henri Michaux (Namur, May 24th 1899 - Paris, October 19th 1984) is a writer, Poète and Belgian painter of origin of expression Francophone naturalized French in 1955. Its work is often attached to the surrealist current , even if it did not belong to the movement.
Distressed teenager, his first literary experiments are marked by the frequentation of Tolstoï and Dostoïevski. Even if it reads much during its studies at the Jésuites, it is not directed first of all towards the writing but towards the Médecine, that it will give up rather quickly however to engage as sailor in the Marine. It sails in 1920 and 1921 but must unload, its boat being disarmed. About at the same time, the discovery of Lautréamont pushes it to write. It will leave there Cas madness circular in 1922, first text which gives already an idea of its style. Then the writings follow one another ( Dreams and the Leg in 1923, Which I was in 1927,…) and the styles multiply.
In the Twenties, he collaborates actively in the review of avant-garde the green Disc rested by Franz Hellens.
For this period, it goes to Paris. Consequently, it will not cease disavowing all that attaches it to the Belgium.
In addition to the purely poetic texts, it writes notebooks of real voyages ( Ecuador in 1929, a barbarian in Asia in 1933) or imaginary ( Ailleurs in 1948, among much of others), of the accounts of its experiments with the Drogue S, and in particular the Mescaline ( Misérable miracle in 1956, Connaissance by the pits in 1961,…), of the collections of Aphorism S and reflections ( Passages in 1950, Posts of angle in 1971,…), etc
Parallel to the writing, as of 1925, it starts to be interested in the Peinture and all graphic arts in general. Exposed for the first time in 1937, it then does not cease working, at the point even as its graphic production partly takes the step on its written production. During all its life, it will practice the watercolour as much as the drawing with the pencil, the gouache that engraving or ink. It is also interested in the penmanship which it will use in many its works.
