Henri Meilhac

Henri Majak known as Henri Meilhac , born on February 23rd 1831 with Paris where he died on July 6th 1897, was a dramatic author, librettist of operettas and operas French.

Biography

After its studies with the Louis-the-Large college, Henri Meilhac worked first of all like employee in a bookstore.

Then it continued as draftsman with the Journal to laugh , of 1852 to 1855, under the pseudonym of Thalin, and gave articles in various reviews where already its imagination in the boulevardier pure spirit was announced. Meilhac was famous, beautiful man, jovial fellow, amateur of pretty women until remaining unmarried.

With Ludovic Halévy, met in 1860, it started a collaboration of almost twenty years, giving the booklets of the most famous operettas of Jacques Offenbach of which the Beautiful Helene (1864), Parisian life (1866), the Large-Duchess of Gérolstein (1867) and Périchole (1868) and also of Carmen of Georges Bizet (1875). It also signed the booklets of operettas of Charles Lecocq and Herve.

The duet also composed of the light comedies and the comedies: Ewes of Panurge (1863), Fanny Lear (1868), Froufrou (1869), Tricoche and Cacolet (1872), the Prince (1876), the Cicada (1877), the Husband of the beginner (1879).

Of the two duettists, Henri Meilhac brought into clean an irresistible imagination, confining sometimes with the daftness. Gaining much money, he spent about it much, seeking the inspiration in the great restaurants, the cigars and champagne.

The collaboration of Meilhac and Halévy ceased in 1881. Meilhac also signed parts with other collaborators, in particular Mam' zeal Nitouche (1883) with Albert Millaud (1844 - 1892) and Manon of Jules Massenet with Philippe Gille. He encouraged the beginnings of Georges Feydeau.

He was elected with the French Academy on April 26th 1888 with the armchair 15, to replace Eugene Labiche.
