Henri Lavedan

Henri Leon Emile Lavedan is a journalist and French dramatic author born with Orleans (Loiret) the April 9th 1859 and died in Paris the September 3rd 1940.

Wire of the catholic journalist Leon Lavedan, director of the Corresponding , Henri Lavedan began itself as journalist, collaborating in the Figaro , the Gil-Blas or the Echo of Paris . It gave very many articles to these periodicals as well as tales and dialogs on the Parisian life, of which much was then joined together in volumes. One of them, High the , scoffs the aristocrats, inaugurating a vein that Lavedan was going then to exploit largely on the scene.

In 1891, it turned to the theater by giving successfully to the Comédie-Française a family. In 1894, the Prince d' Aurec (renamed later the Descendants ), was refused by Jules Claretie with the Comédie-Française but was applauded the Théâtre of the Light comedy where it had more than one hundred representations: the author develops to with it one of his topics of predilection, the satire of the nobility, shown to clear with the Jewish high finance.

Many brilliant and spiritual comedies followed: the Two nobilities (1897), Catherine (1897), the new handset (1898), the Old walker (1899), the Marquis de Priola (1902), attempt at transposition of the myth of Don Juan at the time modern, Varennes (1904) (in collaboration with G. Lenôtre), good time (1906), the assassination of the duke of Own way (1908). He triumphed with the Duel (1905, Comédie-Française), penetrating psychological examination of the relations between two brothers at the same time as call to the appeasing at the time of the tearings induced by the law of separation of the churches and the State.

Its part the assassination of the duke of Own way (1908) was at the base of film carrying the same title, carried out in 1908 by André Calmettes and Charles Bargy.

At the time of the Business Dreyfus, it joined the camp anti-supporter of Dreyfus. After the First World War, vis-a-vis the major transformation of the company described in its comedies, Lavedan chooses to cease writing for the theater. It publishes a novel ( the Way of the Hello , 1920 - 1921), a historical test on Saint Vincent of Paul ( Mr Vincent chaplain of the galères , 1928) and of the memories appeared in the Small Illustration (1933 - 1938).

He was elected with the French Academy on December 8th 1898 to replace Henri Meilhac.
