Henri Ier of Brunswick-Lunebourg (1267-1322)

Henri 1st of Brunswick-Lunebourg , known as the Marvellous , (in German Heinrich 1st von Braunschweig-Lüneburg), born in August 1267, deceased on September 7th, 1322, is Co-duke of Brunswick of 1279 with 1291, duke of Brunswick-Grubenhagen of 1279 with 1322.

Family

He is the son of Albert {{Ier}} of Brunswick-Lunebourg and Alessine de Montferrat.

Marriage and descent

In 1282, it marries Agnès of Saxony (girl of the Landgrave of Thuringe Albert 1st of Saxony)

Biography

With died of his father in 1279, Henri 1st of Brunswick-Lunebourg reigns jointly with his brothers on the principality of Lunebourg and on the principality of Brunswick. Into 1291, the principalities are divided, Henri 1st of Brunswick-Lunebourg receive Grubenhagen and the cities and castles of Einbeck, Hamelin, Clausthal, Amelungsborn, Duderstadt, Hezberg and Osterode and form the duchy of Grubenhagen (1291). The name of duke of Grubenhagen was born towards 1617, the preceding name is nowadays unknown. According to the laws of succession, the dukes could be entitled only dukes of Brunswick, it was only at the 16th century that the name of Lunebourg appears. Albert 1st of Brunswick-Lunebourg receives Lunebourg, Guillaume of Brunswick-Lunebourg receives Wolfenbüttel.

Many legends marked out the reign of Henri 1st of Brunswick-Lunebourg. It is known that it had many conflicts. However, it makes build a certain number of monasteries, Einbeck, Pöhle, Kaltenbourg and Osterode. As from this time when he is a builder, one decrees to him the name of Merveilleux .

He is a prince profiting from a great popularity near his subjects. Henri 1st of Brunswick-Lunebourg installs his residence with Einbeck. In 1320, it is named Count Palatine Saxony.

With its death, its sons divide the duchy of Grubenhagen. This principality is reunified under Albert {{II}} of Brunswick-Göttingen.

Henri 1st of Brunswick-Lunebourg belongs to the first branch of the Maison of Brunswick resulting from the downward Maison of Este of the dukes of Toscane.
