Henri II of Bar

Henri II of Bar , born towards 1190, died in Gaza the November 13rd 1239, was count de Bar of 1214 with 1239. It was wire of Thiébaut Ier, count de Bar, and of Ermesinde of the Bar-on-Seine.

Biography

It appears in the charters as of 1202 and is associated with the government of the Comté of Bar as of 1210. It takes part in 1211 in the Albigensian Crusade, succeeds his father in 1214 and immediately fights for the king de France Philippe II Auguste with the Bataille of Bouvines.

At the time of the War of succession of Champagne (1216 - 1221), it supports actively the count de Champagne Thibaut IV. A friendship remained during several years between the two counts.

With died of the king Louis VIII the Lion (1226), Thibaut involved Henri in the revolt against the regent Blanche of Castille, but it made their tender the March 2nd 1227 with Vendôme.

Thibaut and Henri however scramble towards 1229. The Champagne count is combined with the duke of Lorraine, and Henri, combined with the count de Vaudémont Hugues II and with the bishop of Toul devastate Lorraine in January 1230. Thibaut IV and Simon de Joinville invade and devastate in their turn Barrois, then Hugues IV, duke of Burgundy, invades Champagne. Blanche of Castille must intervene to restore the peace, which is signed in 1232.

Combined to the inhabitants of Metz and to the duke Mathieu II of Lorraine, he was opposed to Jean Ier d' Apremont at the time of the Guerre of the Friends of 1231 to 1234.

Henri founds several abbeys and fact of important donations to others.

He took the cross in 1239 and accompanies Thibaut IV by Champagne and Hugues IV of Burgundy in Holy Land. He is killed with the battle of Gaza in 1239.

He married in 1219 Philippa de Dreux (1192 † 1242), girl of Robert II, count de Dreux and of Yolande de Coucy, and had:
