Henri II of Avaugour

Henri II of Avaugour (January 16th 1205 dead the October 6th 1281) Count de Penthièvre lord of Avaugour and Dinan.

Biography

Wire of Alain Ier d' Avaugour and of Pétronille of Beaumont-with-Maine, girl of Richard Ier of Beaumont-with-Maine.

His/her father promises in marriage it in 1209 to the 5 years age with Alix of Brittany the heiress of the Duchy. Before dying in 1212 Alain de Penthièvre indicates as tutor of his son and heir Gestin de Coëtmen and Juhel III to Mayenne.

Engagement of Henri d' Avaugour is broken the same year by the king Philippe Auguste who organizes the union of the heiress of Brittany with his cousin Pierre de Dreux.

Henri is despoiled of his paternal inheritance and the Penthièvre by the Duke Pierre Ier of Brittany in 1214. He preserves only the small seigniory of Avaugour in Goëlo.

The alliance of Pierre Mauclerc with the king Henri III of England makes it possible the regent Blanche of Castille to pronounce its forfeiture in June 1230. With several other Breton lords Henri then joined the royal party in the hope to recover its heritage. Although it is armed knight by the king in Saint Louis 1234 it is disappointed in its hopes when Jean Ier of Brittany the son of Pierre reaches his majority in 1237 makes its tender with the king.

Between 1238 and 1241 Henri II of Avaugour takes part in the Crusade in which his/her cousin Richard II of Beaumont-with-Maine finds death.

In 1264 his/her son Alain II of Avaugour sells the totality of its goods in Brittany in particular the seigniories of Northern Dinan and Dinan Bécherel to the duke Jean Ier of Brittany against a sum 16.000 books tournaments which his/her father regards as ridiculous, then it disappears from the history

Henri II of Avaugour engages then for the account of his grandson " Henriot" of which he is the tutor an action in cancellation of the transaction in front of the Cour of Justice of the king with Paris. This procedure will lead partially after its death and a transaction with the Duke of Brittany only with the restitution of part of the maternal inheritance to Henri III of Avaugour.

In 1278 Henri II of Avaugour takes the dress of monk to the convent of the Cordeliers of Dinan probably rested by his/her son and not by him like the legend wants it. It is there that he dies the October 6th 1281. It is buried in the vault of the convent where its lying was disappeared today.

Henri de Penthièvre had married the girl of his tutor Marguerite de Mayenne died into 1238/1256 who was also the heiress of the seigniory of Dinan Bécherel of the chief of his mother Gervaise de Dinan dead itself in 1238.

From this union were born three children
