Henri Hertz

Born in 1875, in a Lorraine Jewish family of , Henri Hertz were journalist and writer. He was the friend of Apollinaire, of max Jacob, Alfred Jarry, Henri Barbusse, Jean Cassou, Romain Roland, André Spire and the Symbolists, of the dadaïstes…

Very marked by the Business Dreyfus and conscious of the importance of the question of the Judaism, it is one of the founders of the “Committee of France-Palestine Action” and becomes, after 1925, general secretary of the French section of the world Jewish Congrès. He collaborates in the Mercure de France , with the white Review , with the Social Democracy which Aristide Briand directed, and with the review Symbolist the Phalange .

He wrote several books:

  • Degas , Alcan editions, 1920
  • Towards an unsteady world , Rieder, 1924
  • Tragedy of unsteady times. Tales and poems of 1906 with l954 , Seghers, 1955.

Henri Hertz obtained in 1928 the Prix Mallarmé for the whole of his work. He died in 1966.

Thanks to a legacy offered by its widow, the chancellery of the Universities of Paris, the Sorbonne, instituted, in 1986, the Prix Henri Hertz which “rewards a work (historical, critical or of fiction) suitable to make known and to include/understand the ethical or civic concerns current to which it belonged”.
