Henri Focillon , born in 1881 and died in 1943 is a historian of art French.

Wire of the engraver Victor-Louis Focillon, he is the Director of the Musée of the Art schools of Lyon. Professor of History of art at the university of Lyon, at the school of the Art schools of Lyon, the Sorbonne, the Collège de France then in the United States where it chose to be exiled. Poet, engraver, Pedagog out-par, Henri Focillon formed of the generations of historians of art, such as André Chastel, Louis Grodecki or Jurgis Baltrusaitis. Guardian figure of the history of art, it questioned as varied fields of the discipline as medieval art, the painting of its time, prehistory or art Japanese.

Often voted by plebiscite as a medievist, Henri Focillon was however a sagacious commentator of the art of his time, student of longitudes distant and examining with penetration his contemporaries (one will consult study Lemoine the Hake, Henri Focillon and painting at the 19th century: the language of space in the catalog of the Lyons exposure mentioned in the critical Bibliography).

Its political commitment, a long time overlooked or held for minor, fact of him a figure impossible to circumvent of a history of art engaged in the name of which he pronounced from the United States a call to the free French (one will consult in particular the contributions of François-Rene Martin, Annamaria Ducci and Alice Thomine in the catalog of the Lyons exposure mentioned in the critical Bibliography).

The exposure which was held in 2004 with the Musée of the Art schools of Lyon made it possible to revalue the importance of Henri Focillon, actor eminently important of the history of art French and international.
