Henri Fleisch

Révérent Père Henri Fleisch is a missionary, scholar of the languages of the the Middle East and Préhistoire, teaching with the Lebanon.

Henri Fleisch was born on January 1st, 1904 with Jonvelle (Haute-Saône).

He enters to the Society of Jesus of Lyon Fourvière in September 1921. Ordered catholic Prêtre on August 24th, 1933 it celebrates its first mass with Jonvelle on August 27th.

Self-educated, it is a specialist in the Eastern languages, studies for which it obtains a Doctorat with the Sorbonne in May 1943, with a thesis published in “Work and memories of the Institute of Ethnology of Paris”

It accomplishes many stays abroad, and settles in Lebanon, which it discovered with Bikfaya in 1923-1926. It makes its military service in Syria and will be wounded there during a confrontation; mobilized in 1939 it is made prisoner on June 19th, 1940, and is locked up with the Stalag XII; it is of return in February 1941. As from August 1945 he teaches at the Institute of the Eastern Letters of the Saint-Joseph university of Beirut.

He is the author of two hundred and forty publications, in particular on the Eastern speeches; it is a specialist in Arabic, the Greek, Latin, the syriaque one, of Hebrew… He in particular wrote a small opuscule “Vocabulary of Regional French” on the Patois of Jonvelle, in 1951. He is the author of the “Treaty of philology Arabic” 1961 and 1977, of “My apiary”, in 1945…

He dies on February 10th, 1985 in Lebanon and will be buried there.
