Henri Farman

Henri Farman , born with Paris the May 26th 1874 and died in Paris the August 18th 1958, is a famous manufacturer and pilot of French planes.

Resulting from a British family installed with Paris, Henri Farman, very young, impassions itself for cycling, the car… and aviation. The January 13rd 1908, it carries out above the ground of Issy-les-Moulineaux on board an airplane Voisin, using an engine Gnome, the first official flight in closed circuit of one kilometer (lasted of the flight: 1 minute and 28 seconds) and gains thus the price Archdeacon - Deutsch of Meurthe. A few months later, it (July 8th 1908), whereas it is in round with the the United States of America, it invents the word “aileron”, baptizing of this name the shutters laid out in end of wing of the planes which are presented.

Of return in France, it signs the October 30th 1908 on board an airplane Voisin the first voyage air - known as also “first flight of city to city” - world history to aviation realized between the small village marnais Bouy (close to Mourmelon-the-Large) and Rheims (distance: twenty-seven kilometers). A few months later, it is illustrated during the first Great week of aviation of Champagne organized with Rheims - with the site of current the Air base 112 Rheims-Champagne - from August 22nd to 29th 1909, gaining the test of distance without supply with a hundred and eighty kilometers traversed then the price of the passengers with a solo circuit carried out with two passengers at the speed of 56,304 kilometers per hour in 10 minutes and 39 seconds. It also obtained the record of time of flight, on December 18th, 1910, by exceeding 8 hours at the time of the cut Michelin.

Henri had two brothers Dick and Maurice. With them, in 1919, it founds a company of air construction after successes of the first planes Farman drawn by Maurice since 1910. It created in 1924 with his two brothers the General society of Air transports which will be integrated in Air France in 1933.

The British - and by extension english-speaking - call “Henry” and regard it as an English. However this native of Paris however chose indeed French nationality - it was naturalized French in 1937 - and made moreover francize his first name… Decorated very often, it accepted in particular the Légion of honor.

Died with Paris the August 18th 1958, Henri Farman rests with the Parisian cemetery of Passy, not far from other celebrities of the world of aviation: Maurice Bellonte, Dieudonné Costes and the airframe manufacturer Marcel Dassault.

In Paris, a street and a monument are dedicated to him beside the heliport of Paris, close to the Park Suzanne Lenglen (15th district). To Mourmelon-the-Large Rheims and , two memorials recall the first air voyage of the history which it carried out on October 30th, 1908.
