Henri Ier Borwin de Mecklembourg , (in German Heinrich Ier Borwin von Mecklemburg), born in 1150, deceased the January 28th 1227.

He was prince de Mecklembourg of 1178 to his abdication in 1219.

In 1178, Henri Ier Borwin de Mecklembourg married Mathilde of Saxony († 1219), (girl of Henri the Lion.

Biography

Henri Ier Borwin succeeded his father in 1178. He was in conflict with his cousin Nicolas II of Mecklembourg and could not bring its assistance to his/her father-in-law, Henri the Lion. So Knut VI of Denmark could develop its territories on the the Baltic. Henri Ier Borwin de Mecklembourg was captured by the Danes, in exchange of his freedom it agreed in 1200 to become the vassal one of the king of Denmark. The June 24th 1218, it founded the town of Rostock, city of which it became the vassal one of Knut VI of Denmark. It also founded many monasteries. In 1201, it took part in the committed battle of Stellau against Adolphe III of Hosltein. In thanks for this rendered service, Henri Ier Borwin de Mecklembourg accepted from Knut VI of Denmark Gadebusch and Ratzebourg.

He gave his support for the kingdom of Denmark at the time of his conquest in Estonia (1218 - 1219). He took part in the conflict which opposed the Denmark to the Schauenbourg (1225 - 1227).
