Henri Barbusse
Henri Barbusse (Asnières-sur-Seine, May 17th 1873 - Moscow, August 30th 1935) is a French writer.
He is resulting from a Protestant family of Cevennes origin (attested with the XVII° century) in a hamlet of Anduze, close to Ales (a hamlet " Barbusse" still exist, to see on these origins the special issue of the review Europe (September 1974)
It was pointed out first of all by its collection of poetry " Pleureuses" (1895, republished in 1920), then by a novel naturalist, the Hell (1908). But its main work remains Fire (1916, Goncourt price), account on the First World War whose realism raised the protests of the public of the back as far as the enthusiasm of his/her comrades of combat. In 1917, he will be cofounder and first president of the republican Association of the war veterans]] (ARAC). In 1928 it founds the review Monde with prestigious world collaborations.
Admiror of the Russian Revolution (" The Knife enters the dents" , 1921; Here what one did of Georgia , 1929), it adhered to the French Communist party in 1923; it animated the movement and the review Clarté and sought to define a “proletarian Littérature”. It was one of the instigators of the pacifist movement Amsterdam-Pleyel, of which he becomes the president. It made several voyages in the USSR and wrote a biography of Stalin (1935).
He was married with Hélyonne, girl of Augusta Holmès and Catulle Mendès.
Henri Barbusse is buried with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise to Paris.
