Henri Alleg , of her true name Harry Salem , born with London in 1921, is a Journaliste free-Algerian, member of the PCF and was the director of Algiers Républicain .

In 1940, it settled in Algeria. It militated within the Algerian Communist party. In 1951, he became director of the daily newspaper Algiers republican He entered clandestinity in 1955, date of prohibition of his newspaper to Algeria. He however continued to transmit articles in France from which some will be published by Humanity .

He was stopped the June 12th 1957 by the parachutists of the 10th D.P, in the residence of Maurice Audin, his friend, decree the day before and which will be tortured with death.

Henri Alleg was sequestered one month with El-Biar, where he was tortured and undergoes a interrogation carried out after an injection of Penthotal. It was then transferred to the camp from Lodi where there remained one month, then in Barberousse, the civil prison of Algiers. It is there that he will write the Question, dissimulating the written pages and transmitting them to its lawyers.

In the Question , it told its period of detention and the maltreatment that it undergoes there, into full Guerre with Algeria. First of all published in France with the Editions of Midnight, the work was immediately prohibited. the Nile Andersson republished it in Switzerland, fourteen days after prohibition striking in France in March 1958. In spite of its prohibition in France, this book contributed considerably to reveal the phenomenon of torture in Algeria.

Three years after her arrest, Henri Alleg was accused d'" attack with safety external of État" and of " reconstitution of league dissoute" and condemned to 10 years of prison. Transferred in France, he was imprisoned with the prison of Rennes. Benefitting from a stay in a hospital, it benefitted from it to escape. Helped by Communist militants, it will join the Czechoslovakia.

It returned to France after the Accords of Evian, then to Algeria where it took part in the rebirth of the newspaper Algiers Républicain . Become " Persona non grata " in Algeria, it was reinstalled in France in 1965.

In 2005, Henri Alleg Co-signed a letter with the President of the Republic, asking at the French State to recognize the abandonment of the Harkis in 1962.

He is currently member of the presidency of honor of the communist Pôle of rebirth in France.
