Henri Abraham

Henri Abraham (1868-1943) French physicist.

Henri Abraham between with the National university in 1886. It is received second with the contest of aggregation of physics in 1889, in front of Charles Fabry. He becomes aggregate preparer in November 1889 at the Physics laboratory of the National university, directed by Jules Violle, where he carries out his thesis “ Nouvelle determination of the relationship between the electromagnetic and electrostatic units ” that he supports in 1892. He is professor with the college Chaptal (Nov. 1890 - Sept. 1894), then the Louis-the-Large Lycée (Sept. 1894 - Nov. 1900) and in charge of conferences (1897) then university lecturer (Nov. 1900) with the ENS after the departure of Marcel Brillouin at the Collège de France and succeeds Jules Violle (1900) as director of the physics laboratory. He is director of laboratory to the practical École of the high studies of 1904 to 1905. He is part-time lecturer of physics to the Faculty of Science of Paris, attached to the ENS, on November 1st, 1904, and appointed full professor of physics in 1912, he is professor of exchange in Brazil in 1922. It is put at the retirement in October 1937, date on which it obtains the honorary membership. Eugene Bloch takes his succession, then Georges Bruhat and Yves Rocard.

He was general secretary of the French company of physics of 1900 to 1912, then president in 1922, founder of the Company of the Radioélectriciens, then president and general secretary of the International union of physics pure and applied in 1934.

Its scientific work relates mainly to the electromagnetic phenomena. He directed in particular the theses of Jean Mercier (1923) and Pierre Fleury (1921).

He will die in deportation.
