Henri-Irenee Marrou
Henri-Irenee Marrou , born with Marseilles in 1904, died in Borough-the-Queen in 1977, antiquisant Historian French, specialist in the primitive Christianity.
Biography
It is born in 1904 from an average family Catholique from the south from the France. It makes brilliant studies, between with the National university of the street of Ulm and obtains the aggregation history in 1929, classified second behind Alphonse Dupront. It enters then to the French École of Rome, where it works on holy Augustin.
Admiror of Teilhard of Chardin and Charles Péguy, it meets Emmanuel Mounier, with which it will collaborate in the review Esprit . He is also the founder of the Études augustiniennes . He travels then in Italy (Naples) and in Egypt (Cairo) before teaching with Nancy, then Montpellier. He obtains in 1937 his thesis on Saint Augustin and the end of the ancient culture . Music lover, he will become member of the Académie Charles-Cross-country race and signs, under the pseudonym of “Henri Davenson”, of the articles and the books of Musicologie.
During the Second world war, it engages in the Résistance. In 1945, it is named professor with the Sorbonne, and writes its most important works. It is one of the first collaborators of the collection “Christian Sources”, publishing texts of the Pères of the Church. During the Guerre of Algeria, he denounces the use of the Torture, which is worth a searching to him. He approves the Vatican II highly, combatant at the same time the integrist ones and the progressists influenced by the Marxisme. He shows himself being wary with regard to May 1968.
He was a friend of Marcel Simon.
