History
Born from the Blavet and its bridges, Hennebont indeed means way of the bridge or old bridge , according to the Breton etymologists. As of the period of the age of iron, a Oppidum Gallic is installed on the site of Polvern, along Blavet. At the time medieval, the seigniory of Kémenet-Héboué establishes a feudal Motte on the rocky outcrop above Saint-Caradec, small village of Right Bank. A strategic situation which makes it possible to control the narrow passage of the river.
In the middle of the 13th century, the duke of Brittany Jean the Russet-red (1237 - 1286) dismantles the feudal mound of the lords of Hennebont and undertakes the construction of the fortifications on left bank of Blavet, the closed city. Hennebont very quickly becomes an important fortified town of the Duchy of Brittany, which will be worth many seats during this time to him.
For example in 1342, during the war of succession of the Duchy of Brittany, Charles of Blois besieges the walls of the city. In the absence of his/her husband Jean de Monfort, prisoner of the French, Jehanne de Flandres organizes resistance victoriously and comes to take refuge behind the walls of Hennebont.
The 16th century is marked by peace and prosperity for the whole of the area. It is during this century that the basilica Our-Lady-of-Paradise is built on the initiative of marshal-shoeing François Michard and with the assistance of the population.
Until 18th and 18th centuries, the area saw primarily maritime trade and agricultural. The common one counts then between 1.500 and 2.000 inhabitants.
Hennebont is also a commercial and administrative city of intermediate size. If, in 1666, the foundation of Lorient rings the knell of its primacy, Hennebont does not remain about it less, throughout the century, a town of a great vitality. The private mansions of this time testify to this prosperity. The administrative and legal preponderance of the seneschalsy hennebontaise declines however with the profit of Lorient, where settles the Compagnie of the Indies in the middle of the 18th century.
In 1857, the National stud farms are installed on the site of the old abbey of Joye. Hennebont then becomes an important place for the development of the Breton horse. With the industrial era, the city profits from an important activity thanks to the establishment with Kerglaw, on the commune of Inzinzac-Lochrist, from the Forges of Hennebont.
Those ensure the development of the traffic on the Blavet with the importation of the coal of England and allow the rise of the regional industry of preserve of Tinplate. Become quoted worker, Hennebont experiences, between the two wars, a significant urban development with the construction of new zones of habitat on the peripheries.
The August 7th 1944, most of the downtown area is destroyed by the bombardments of the German troops cut off in the pocket from Lorient . Hennebont is on fire and the oldest districts are very touched. After war comes naturally the era from the rebuilding which will continue until the middle of the Sixties. It is about at that time that the Forging mills of Hennebont close their doors in a climate of Workers' struggle. This period strongly marked of its print the city.
