Hendrick van Balen

Hendrick van Balen , is a vitrailler, painter and decorator of Flemish furniture, born with Antwerp in 1560, died in 1632. It had as pupils Antoine Van Dyck and Snyders. Louvre has its Repas of the gods .

His/her father was an oil merchant, candles and food products varied, which did not prevent the Hendrick young person from receiving a certain education thanks to the works which were in the shop. According to Carel van Mander, it had as a Master Adam van Noort, but of other sources mention the name of Martin of Your.

He had five wire and a girl. Three of its sons devienrent known artists: Jan van Balen (1611 - 1654), Gaspard van Balen (1615 - 1641) and Hendrick van Balen II (1623 - 1661). His/her daughter married the painter Theodore van Thulden.

It specialized in the mythological or religious scenes with the idyllic decoration. It made the voyage in Italy, where it visited in particular Rome and Venice and became acquainted with the German painter Hans Rotterdammer. On its return it opened a workshop of engraving in Antwerp where it produced works of Jan Bruegel the Young person and of Joos de Momper. It had as pupils inter alia Gerald Seghers, Antoine Van Dyck and Frans Snyders.
