Hemidactylus mabouia

The common hémidactyle , or Gecko of the houses , or (in the Antilles) domestic Mabouya , is a widespread Espèce of gecko night and arboricolous in many countries.

The name of this Espèce comes from the word mabuya , which indicates in the the Caribbean a mafaisant spirit. This term passed in the current language to indicate the geckos.

Geographical distribution

This Lézard is originating in the African continent , but it was spread in many countries, as in South America.

Climatic parameters

This Reptile lives in a hot and wet climate, where the Hygrométrie exceeds the 60%, with temperatures between 25 and 30°C the day and falling slightly the night (20 with 25°C approximately).

Breeding in captivity

One needs a semi-tropical Terrarium of big size with a great number of hiding-places and large branches. A bottom simulating a wall or a large rock is preferable.

Food

This animal is insectivorous and drives out the majority of the Insecte S and Arthropode S of adapted size.

Behavior

It adapted well to the human presence, frequently entering the houses to drive out the insects, where it cotoie the man.

It is a territorial animal, which defends its territory against the other males.

Maturity

This gecko is mature a little before its first year.

The eggs are laid two by two.

Incubation

The eggs incubate during approximately two months.

The small ones

The small ones have the same food mode as the adults.
