Helwan

Helwan (one can also find Hilwan or Hulwan ) is a town of Egypt on the edge of the the Nile, vis-a-vis the ruins of Memphis, with a population of approximately 230.000 inhabitants (in 1989).

Geography

Helwan is suburbs of the south of the Cairo, served by the Métro of Cairo (terminus of line 1). Helwan is close to the town of MIT-Rahineh. Local industry includes/understands the production of Fer and Acier, the Textile and the Ciment. The zone also has sources of hot Soufre.

Famous buildings of Helwan

The astronomical observatory Khédiviala was built there between 1903 and 1904, and it was used a long time to observe the Halley's Comet.

Its psychiatric center, the Behman hospital, built in 1939, is oldest and largest of the psychiatric private clinics of Egypt.

Helwan has also its university, the Université of Helwan.

Vestiges archaeological

In addition to being vis-a-vis the ruins of Memphis, Helwan has an archaeological funerary room discovered in 1946, and many artefacts were found in the area. Some resemble those of Göbekli Tepe.

Helwan is also a first name.
