Helmut Schmidt , born the December 23rd 1918 with Hamburg, is a German politician member of the social democrat Parti (SPD).

Biography

In 1953, he was elected at the West German Parliament under the social democrat label. From 1969 to 1972, it occupied the functions of Minister for National defense in the government of Willy Brandt and was minister of the Economy and of Finances of 1972 to 1974, before becoming federal Chancelier of 1974 with 1982. It had taken over chancellor Willy Brandt, constrained with the resignation after a scandal of espionage implying one of its advisers.

Its formula “the profits of today make the investments of tomorrow and the uses of the day after tomorrow” remained famous.

Helmut Schmidt had and has still a good personal agreement with Valery Giscard d'Estaing, president of the French Republic .

It had to leave the chancellery after the Liberal party, member of its coalition, carried out by its Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, had chosen an inversion of alliance while giving its support for the Christian Democrat Helmut Kohl.

Since the end of its political career, Schmidt works as chronicler for the weekly magazine Die Zeit and as writer and journalist. It publishes political books and mixes with the political life and social German.

He was a member of the Bohemian Club.
