Helm

In the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, the Gouffre of Helm is a vast valley located at the North-West of the Ered Nimrais ( White Mountains ).

The valley is in all its width by a range of hills called Helm' S Dike and behind those throne the fortress of Aglarond or Extremely-the-Horn ( Hornburg ) at the entry of the Scintillating Cavernes ( Glittering Caves ).

In the beginning the valley was occupied by a small regiment of the Gondor but after Calenardhon, the place passed under the sovereignty of the Rohan and a camping of Rohirrim was installed where stationed the guards of the Gués of Isen.

During the war with the Dunlendings ordered by Wulf, Rohirrim following their king Helm Hammerhand and most of the people found refuge in this shelter in which they held during all of winter MT 2758-2759.

An ascending long way leads to the principal door of the fortress. In the fort cattle sheds and arms manufacture as well as a big room excavated in the mountainside are. There is also a large tower (the Hornburg itself) at the top of which the large horn of Helm Hammerhand is fixed. The Pit which is located just beside the fortress is prohibited by length Mur of the Pit built in solids blocks of rock except for small arches which allows water Ruisseau of the Pit to penetrate. That constitutes a very important drinking water supplement in the case of a seat of long life. The wall measures 20 feet top and is sufficiently broad to make it possible four men side-by-side to be held. The access to the fortress since the Pit is made possible by a long staircase which carries out to the door of Hornburg.
