Hell' S Kitchen ( kitchen of the hell ) is a district of Manhattan to New York, delimited by the 34e and 59e streets, the 8th avenue and the Hudson. Located at the north of Chelsea and the west of the Midtown, the district is also known under the name of Clinton .
Origin of the name
One had formerly affublé of this expression an hot district of the south of London. One finds of it the first reference relating to New York in the edition of the NewYork Times dated September 22nd 1881, following the report of a journalist who had visited the district with the police force to cover a business of multiple murders. He spoke about " Hell' S Kitchen" in connection with a building giving on the 39e street and the 10th avenue, and declared that the very whole zone was " probably more feeling reluctant of all the ville".
There exist other possible explanations concerning the origin of this name:

Clinton
In the last years, the district was rehabilitated and its population evolved to higher social layers, like other zones of Manhattan. Consequently, its other name, Clinton, became more popular.The Clinton term comes from DeWitt Clinton, mayor of New York and governor of the State of New York, at the 19th century. The district was built on the grounds of its old farm. Besides one finds there a public garden which is called DeWitt Clinton Park.
