Heliotrope of Curaçao

the heliotrope of Curaçao ( Heliotropium curassavicum ) is a plant of the family of the Boraginaceae , originating in America, naturalized in southernmost Europe, where it especially pushes in the Western part of the Mediterranean basin, on the sandy coasts in the vicinity immediate of the sea. It forms often important tufts, with the glaucous sheets, from where emergent of small white flowers.

Description

Ecology and habitat

Hardy perennial halophyte, pushing only in the places with content saltworks, sands of the seaside primarily. One meets it in the west of the Mediterranean basin until the Sicily.

General and vegetative morphology

herbaceous Plant at base woody, fleshy, of glaucous color. Stem laid down with ascending being able to reach 70 cm length. Sheet S simple alternate, ovals with linear, sometimes slightly spatulées, with only one central vein.

Floral morphology

Inflorescence in Racème of Cyme S uniparous scorpioïdes. Small green chalice tubulé with five triangular points. white Corolla (5 mm or less) with five lobes with greenish or purplished yellow throat. Five cheesecloths. Rather short and conical style. Ovary supère.

Fruit and seeds

The Fruit is made of four small Akène S (méricarpes).
