Helene , girl of the people, marries of the Roman Emperor Constance Chlorinates, was the mother of Constantin I {{er}}, him also Roman Emperor.
She is known to have organized the first restoration of the holy places Christian of Jerusalem. She would have gone in the Holy City in order to find there the traces of the martyrdom of Jesus-Christ and would have thus largely influenced the installation of the places of pilgrimage in the city. By this activity, it would have also involved the transformation of these places and their transformation (the objective more religious than archaeological hardly lent itself to safeguarding).
The most important discovery of these excavations is the Invention of the Holy Cross (the discovery).
The town of Elne, old Illiberis , car its name of the Helene empress. Constantin has indeed famous in IIIe century the city in Castrum Helenae , become Helna , then Elna and finally French Elne.
Representations
Helene is represented already old, in costume of empress, holding a cross or the nails of the Crucifixion. She is sometimes associated with her Constantin son. It is also represented holding with the hand a model of church.
