Helenaveen

Helenaveen is a village of the south-east of the commune Dutchwoman of Deurne, in the Brabant-Septentrional . Helenaveen is located in the middle of the area of Peel, area of Tourbière S.

History

Helenaveen was founded in 1853 by an owner of the extraction of the Tourbe, Jan van der Griendt whose wife was called Helena Panis. Along the channel of transport Helenavaart were built the villages of exploitation Griendtsveen and Helenaveen. These two villages are the only ones of this type in the south of the Netherlands, and it is one of the reasons for which the village of Helenaveen has a statute of Patrimoine protected since 1999.

Today there is no more industrial exploitation of the peat. Helenaveen celebrated its 150 years of existence in 2003.

Artistic inspiration

Helenaveen inspired several Dutch artists, as well in the literature as in the music.
  • the group Rowwen Hèze devoted a song Helenaveen to him,
  • the writer Toon Kortooms took Helenaveen like model for Mariaveen , village where some of its regionalistic novels are held.
  • the singer Jules of Corte had been established there.
