Helena Guergis
Helena C. Guergis (born the February 19th 1969) is a political Femme Canadian. She represents the district of Simcoe-Grey to the House of Commons of Canada since 2004, and is currently parliamentary secretary with David Emerson, the Minister for the International business. Guergis is member of the Conservative party of Canada.
Beginnings and career
Guergis was born with Barrie, in Ontario and is very high close in Angus, in Essa Township, where its family with a long story of political implication. It is of Assyrian ascent , Swedish and Jewish.
Guergis makes studies in Georgian College where it supplements a program of Ontarian real estate. After its graduation, it opens a store called Final Touch in Rainbow Mall in Angus. She also works as collecting of funds voluntary for the food bank of Angus and the literary council of Barrie. Guergis was assistant of district for the provincial deputy progressist-conservative Joe Tascona and becomes later his executive assistant.
Provincial policy
Guergis closes its company after six years and half in order to accept a political station of adviser with Janet Ecker which was Minister for the Education and Finances of the government of Ontario. Guergis occupies is posted during three years and half and is also useful during three mandates at the station of vice-president of the provincial executive of the Party progressist-conservative.
She was progressist-preserving candidate in the district of the downtown area Toronto is of Trinity-Spadina to the provincial election of 2003. The Party progressist-conservative did not aim this district as being " gagnable" and Guergis agrees to be a candidate " sacrifiée" in order to gain experiment. It finishes third, far behind the deputy néo-democrat outgoing Rosario Marchese. Guergis supports the candidature of Frank Klees for the direction of the Parti progressist-conservative Ontario in 2004.
Deputy with the federal one
Guergis demolishes the liberal deputy outgoing Paul Bonwick by 100 votes with the election of 2004 to gain the district of Simcoe-Grey. The liberals form a Minority government after the election, and Guergis is named with the Shadow cabinet as a spokesperson as regards International cooperation. The January 24th 2005, it is also named spokesperson associated for the Elder ones.
When it aspired to a provincial seat in 2003 in the socially liberal district of Trinity-Spadina, Guergis affirms that it would vote in favor of the Homosexual marriage if it on the occasion of it. Answering a question about the homosexual marriage with a debate of the candidates, she affirms: " I believe in the right to choose, then I will vote in favor such project of loi."
The following year, making countryside in the socially preserving district of Simcoe-Grey, Guergis affirms that she will vote against the bill of the federal government legalizing the homosexual marriage. She explains why the majority of its principals oppose the bill, and that she was to defend their opinions. Guergis votes against the law C-38 which gave the legal sanction to the marriage between joint of the same sex in 2005. The same year, it files in a private bill putting of the restrictions on the deputies who cross the parquet floor of the room after their election.
Guergis is re-elected with 49,8% of the votes in 2006, increasing its margin of victory in a substantial way while the conservatives gain a minority government at the national level. The February 7th 2006, it is named parliamentary secretary with David Emerson, the Minister for the International business, by the Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The nomination of Guergis raised a little controversy, since Emerson had made defection since the Liberal party the same day that it has accepted its nomination with the cabinet. The previous day its nomination, Guergis informs the media which it would emit a press release indicating that it continued to support legislations anti-defection. The official statement is never emitted.
