Heiva

The Heiva is a traditional annual demonstration which takes place in July in French Polynésie. The 125e edition takes place in July 2007.

Artistic and sporting contests

During Heiva, are organized artistic contests (Chant S and Danse S) and sportsmen (in particular the throw of Javelot, to raise it stone and the race of Pirog).

History

Following the christianization of the archipelagoes by the Company missionary of London at the beginning of the 19th century, two prohibited against the “songs, plays or entertainments lascifs” enacted by the king Pomaré II in 1819 and the Pomaré queen in 1842.

The celebration as from 1880 of the French national Festival allows the return of traditional festivities and their maintenance, under the name of festivals of Tiurai.
